Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB), Subang, Shah Alam

Overview

Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SAAS) also called Subang Airport or Subang Skypark, is an airport located in Subang, Selangor, Malaysia, and primarily serves general aviation and some turbo-prop domestic flights and also regional international commercial flights operated by Firefly and Berjaya Air.

It is one of the largest Fixed Base Operators in the region and with covered hangar space of over 30,000m2 it is capable of accommodating a 737 BBJ or A319 ACJ. There is also a cafeteria, office space and lecture rooms incorporated into the hangar building. SAAS Airport is a very popular hub and serves business and private aircraft, helicopters and cargo carriers as well as general aviation. Eurocopter Malaysia use SAAS as their home base.

There are several flying clubs with their headquarters at the airport, Subang Flying Club being the oldest. For commercial airlines both Berjaya Air and Malaysia Airlines both have headquarters here.

In 2012 the airport handled 1,442,514 passengers and 74,008 aircraft movements. The airport is owned by the Malaysian Government and operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.

History

The first flight landed at SAAS in August 1965 and by 1990 there were three terminals. During this time the airport suffered two major fires that forced aircraft to be diverted to other airports. By December 1997 there had been nearly 16 million passengers pass through the airport.

In 2002 AirAsia were hoping to use SAAS as their main hub but five years later the government would still only allow turbo-prop and general aviation flights to use the airport. By 2007 funds of RM300 million has been allocated to transform terminal three into the main passenger terminal and work started in 2008. By October 2009 the work was completed and terminal three was renamed Subang Skypark.

Runways

When SAAS opened in 1965 the runway was the longest in Southeast Asia at 3,700 metres long. This fact has now been superseded by Kuala Lumpur International Airport KLIA where the runway is 4,124 metres.

SAAS Airport is the last word in sleek and modern architecture. There are no direct rail links at SAAS but the Bus Route U81 goes between Zone 4 of the airport and Central Market in Chinatown, stopping at KL Sentral train station.

Taxi is the best form of transport between the city centre and the airport and costs about RM36. Make sure you purchase a taxi coupon from the desk inside the arrivals hall before going out to the taxi ranks.

Car hire is available at desks in the arrivals hall but booking in advance may be better.
