Senai International Airport is in the town of Senai, close to Johur Bahru in Malaysia. Situated about 25 kilometres northwest of Johor Baru Senai is the home to many multinational electronic companies as well as the airport. The airport can handle up to 4.4 million passengers each year and 100,000 tonnes of cargo.
The Aero Mall or Aeropolis is a retail space of around 25,000m2 built by the airport operator and opened in July 2010. The mall is an external stand-alone shopping centre although it is connected to the airport and is seen a focal point for local people for entertainment, shopping and dining. In a two kilometre radius round the airport there are over 45 major manufacturers and around 40,000 people living in the area.
The airport opened in 1974 and the original intention was to stop passengers and freight going to nearby Singapore for transport. The rapid development of the South Johor area has now made Senai International Airport into a major hub in Malaysia.
The runway has been extended to 3800 metres and a parallel runway built to accommodate more aircraft. .
The terminal building at Senai International Airport is low, sleek and very modern. As you approach the airport terminal by road there is the attractive Senai Mosque surrounded by tranquil gardens with its twin blue domes and twin minarets.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the terminal with a selection of shops to while away your time in. The modern check in facilities and baggage handling make travelling easier and big screens have up-to-the minute flight information on.
Limited free Wifi is available in the Cargo Centre as well as the Main Terminal with additional purchase required after the first thirty minutes. There is an on-site police station, postal services and a customer service and information desk. For smokers there is a dedicated smoking lounge and for business travellers there is a Plaza Premium Lounge. This is third lounge opened by Hong Kong based Plaza Premium Management
Security at the airport is paramount and some of the most high tech equipment is used with biometric and smart card systems.
