Firefly takes off on biofuel

8th Sep 2022 Today, Firefly Airlines performed its maiden flight using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) wants to be carbon neutral by 2050, so this is part of their plan.

During today's Selangor Aviation Show 2022 at SkyPark RAC Subang, a SAF refuelling demo will show off the first domestic passenger flight powered by SAF.

The official airline partners for this three-day event are Malaysia Airlines Bhd and Firefly.

The ATR72-500 using 38% SAF-blended fuel left from Subang for Penang as part of flight FY1436.

Philip See Yew Jin, chief sustainability officer for the MAG group and CEO of Firefly, said that since Malaysia Airlines flew its maiden passenger trip to Singapore utilising SAF in June of this year, Firefly is preparing to operate the first domestic Malaysian flight powered by SAF.

In a statement released today, he said, "Firefly's use of SAF will be one of its most important contributions to a cleaner and more stable future. This shows Firefly's commitment to green and sustainable innovations, which is in line with the 2022 World Tourism Day theme of "Rethinking Tourism."

Petronas Dagangan Bhd's chief operating officer stated that the company is thrilled to be able to offer SAF to Firefly.

From September 8 to September 10, 2022, the Selangor Aviation Show is a corporate aviation event.

By bringing together local and international industry professionals, it will make it easier for them to network, find business opportunities, and cover different regional prospects.
