Mulu Airport (MZV), Mulu

Overview

Mulu is on the island of Borneo about 110 kilometres from the town of Miri and the ocean. The best way to get her is definitely by air and Mulu Airport is the main link for this region to the rest of the world. It therefore serves a very important function; before the airport was built the only form of transport was by boat. There is no road access to Mulu and the Gunung Mulu National Park. If you decide to stay at the Royal Mulu Hotel Resort a few kilometres away there is a road between the airport and the resort.

Even without road access Mulu is a very popular destination and thousands of visitors each year travel to the area to visit the famous caves. The Clear Water Cave is the longest cave in South East Asia. Apart from the caves and the hotel resort the rest of Mulu is mostly undeveloped. The airport is located 2.5 kilometres west of Mulu National Park.

The airport is owned by the Malaysian Government and is operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.

History

The first plane flew into Mulu Airport on 29 May 1992. The arrival of the planes would cause great excitement amongst the local people who would come to the airport to watch.

Terminals

Don’t expect too much when you arrive at Mulu Airport terminal. The low building with its green roof looks very smart but it is a very basic structure with few facilities. There is a small restaurant and a souvenir shop but not much else. There is no ATM, currency exchange counter or car hire desk. The airport is open between 10am to 5pm, but if a flight is delayed the airport will remain open until the aircraft has departed or been cancelled.

Transport To and From the Airport

On arrival at Mulu Airport you will need to have already made travel arrangements as there are no taxis or buses available. Transport can be arranged through some of the locals at the airport to go to the caves but agree a price first. Apart from that onward travel is strictly on foot or by river. If you are staying at the Royal Mulu Hotel Resort there is a shuttle van.
