Miri Airport (MYY), Miri

Overview

Miri is in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia and is very close to the border of Brunei Darussalam. It is a gateway to the northern region of this state. Miri is an extremely important city in Malaysia and is filled with many tourist destinations, shopping centres, business centres and official buildings. The Malaysia theme of “East meets West” is very apparent here

Miri International Airport ranks number three for aircraft movements in the Malaysian top ten airports list and fifth in passenger movements. In 2008 there were 1.5 million passengers and 38,172 aircraft movements and in 2012 that has increased to 2,018,415 passengers with 45,127 aircraft movements.

The airport is publicly owned by the Malaysian Government and operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad.

History

An upgrade to the airport was completed in 2003 on time and within budget. The work involved extending the runway to 2,745 metres and constructing a new parallel taxiway of 1620 metres. The existing parking apron was widened to accommodate the Airbus 330 aircraft.

Terminals

The terminal was completely rebuilt a couple of years after the upgrade and the new one opened in 2005 and has all the facilities expected of a new modern airport. There are plenty of shops and a variety of bars and restaurants. The check-in desks use modern systems for baggage handling and all the desks have clearly marked signage.
