The financial assistance extended by the embattled flag carrier to the families or surviving relatives of the crash victims of flight MH17 is part of the airline's commitment to their customers.
Malaysia Airlines has assured the families of the crash victims financial support that amounts up to $5,000 for each victim to ease their economic burdens while attending to their dead.
Flight MH17 was flying over Ukrainian eastern region when it got hit by a surface-to-air missile. The plane was flying eastward on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam on the morning of July 17.
Part of the assistance the airline will provide to the families are hotel accommodations, transport allowance, and meals while they are in Amsterdam waiting for the identity of the remains of their loved ones. Additionally, the airline will also assign trained staff for the families of all victims to act as caregiver and provide emotional support and whatever it is they may need during their stay in the Dutch capital.
The airline has already dispatched 79 caregivers and support staff to Amsterdam, and another 43 based in Kuala Lumpur.
The $5,000 financial assistance is channeled through Citibank branches through logistical agreement. It doesn't form part of the total compensation the families will eventually receive. It would not, in any way, affect their legal rights to claim as well.
Malaysia Airlines is also grateful to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for the assistance extended to the family members in Amsterdam.
