AirAsia Berhad has big plans for China it would seem. The Malaysian-based low-cost carrier has already announced plans for a new direct flight starting at the end of January, 2016. The flight would take passengers directly from Langkawi in Malaysia to the Chinese city of Guangzhou.
This is a part of AirAsia’s strategy to increase its presence on some less used routes and create a better connection to China.
AirAsia Group has recently also launched flights between Changsha and Bangkok, operated by Thai AirAsia, as well as Kota Kinabalu to Wuhan and Krabi (Malaysia) to Guangzhou (China), both of which will be operated by AirAsia.
In addition, AirAsia’s Thai branch has recently introduced new schedules from its new regional hub at U-Tapao International Airport to Macau in Singapore and is also pondering opening new routes into India.
Chief executive officer at AirAsia Aireen Omar said the following about the airline’s future plans:
We will continue to add more aircraft orders as we go further because we are not only growing in Malaysia, but also in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, India and hopefully in Japan.
According to Omar, the first Airbus A320NEO planes, which are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2016, will be of great help in expanding the airline’s existing regional services, while some of the new planes will also be used to replace the older fleet.
AirAsia Cancels Chennai Flights
Meanwhile, if you’re planning to travel to Chennai in the next couple of days, you may have to reschedule as the Chennai International Airport will be closed until 6th December.
As a result of this, AirAsia has cancelled all flights to and from Chennai.
Here is a statement from the carrier:
We wish to notify guests about the update received on closure of Chennai International Airport. It will remain closed till 12:00 hrs on 6 Dec 2015 due to bad weather conditions.
The airline also said it will notify passengers via email or SMS about their flight status and alternatives.
