As the Mount Raung continues to be active and pose a threat, several carriers, including Malaysian carriers AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines have cancelled their scheduled services to and from Bali and Lombok in Indonesia.
AirAsia Issues “Notice to Airmen”
The carrier has issued a “Notice to Airmen” in which the airline says the Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali should be closed between 9:25 AM and 9:30 PM. The Lombok International Airport, on the other hand will be closed from 9:12 AM to 9:30 PM on Friday.
Guests that have already booked their tickets to and from Bali and Lombok will be notified of their flight cancelations, as well as given alternate options, the Malaysian carrier had said.
AirAsia said the following in a statement regarding the situation:
AirAsia is working closely with all relevant authorities and provide updates if there are any further flights affected from today, 10th July. Guests are advised to check AirAsia’s website or social media pages for further announcements.
Carrier will Continue to Monitor Updates from Agencies
According to Malaysia Airlines, which also operates Bali flights, it will also monitor the situation with Mount Raung and will provide regular updates.
Other carriers have also canceled their flights to Bali for today, including Virgin Australia and Jetstar. Flights between Australia and Bali have been grounded since Wednesday, after the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre put the red code volcanic ash advisory to Mount Raung.
Indonesia AirAsia has also rerouted flights away from the area and said in a statement it will keep monitoring updates from relevant agencies.
Mount Raung is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia and it has been emitting ash for nearly a week now. As a result, the visibility at the nearby Ngurah Rai Airport is reduced.
