MASWings Donated Over RM 40,050 for Sabah Quake Victims

14th Jul 2015

The Board of Trustees of Sabah Park has received a big donation from the Malaysian carrier MASWings for the victims of the Sabah earthquake. The total donation given by MASWings is RM 40,050.

Donation Handed in Minister Manjun’s Office

Chief Executive Officer of MASWings, Captain Ritzerwan Rashid handed the donation in the Tourism, Environment and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidia Manjun’s office on Monday. Captain Ritzerwan made a personal contribution to the cause as well.

MASWings and Malaysia Airlines, its mother company, collected the funds mostly through its staff in Sabah and Sarawak. The funds were boosted with public donations, which were also initiated by the Malaysian carrier.

Passengers of MASWings could also make their contribution on selected flights to and from Sabah and Sarawak.

The idea is to help the victims of the Sabah earthquake and their families affected by it.

The Sabah quake donation effort began soon following the earthquake and lasted between 10th June and 30th June. MASWings has set up donation collection stations across East Malaysia at its ticketing offices and check-in counters.

The Earthquake was 6.0 on the Moment Magnitude Scale

The Sabah earthquake hit the town of Ranau in the state of Sabah in Eastern Malaysia on 5th June this year. The tremor lasted about 30 seconds and was 6.0 on the MMS (moment magnitude scale) strong. As a result, 18 students from Singapore died. In addition, 187 people climbing the nearby mountains that came from all over the world, including U.S, E.U, Australia and other countries were stranded. Fortunately, they were rescued soon after.

Tremors could also be felt in several other cities nearby, including Kota Kinabalu and have reached the neighboring Malaysian state of Sarawak. Smaller vibrations were also detected in Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei, but were nowhere as strong as in Ranau.
