Malindo Air Launches Two Domestic Routes

30th Jul 2014

Malindo Air, the Malaysian unit of Indonesia's largest airline, Lion Air, has been building up its presence in the country with the recent launch of two more domestic routes.

The low-cost airline is rapidly expanding its route network since it started commercial operations only in March 2013. Recently, it has added Johor Bahru and Kuantan to its rapidly-growing network.
The twin routes, Kuala Lumpur (Subang)-Kuantan and Penang-Johor Bahru, were launched  simultaneously on July 23. The airline will certainly enjoy a monopoly on this route as there are no other airline operates on it.

The airline serves the Kuala Lumpur-Kuantan route with a once-daily frequency, while its Penang-Johor Bahru route has a five times weekly frequency. Malindo Air has to contend with another budget carrier, AirAsia, on this route as the latter has already established its direct service between the two destinations.

The carrier will use its ATR 73-600 turboprop on these two routes.

Malindo Air is a joint venture between Malaysia's National Aerospace and Defence Industries and the Lion Air Group, the largest privately-run airline operator of Indonesia. The former holds the controlling stake of 51% while the latter holds 49% of the venture as mandated by law.

Currently, it flies to 11 destinations across Malaysia and 11 international destinations in four countries. It operates a fleet of 16 aircraft - 10 ATR-600 turboprops and 6 B737 jetliners.
