11th Jan 2017

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) reported 118.5 million passengers used its airports in the last year. According to the biggest airport operator in Malaysia, this is 5.7% more than in 2015.

Malaysian airports operated by MAHB recorded 88.8 million domestic passenger movements, for a 6% increase from 2015. International passenger movements increased 8% in 2016 from 2015, for a total of 43.2 million.

At the same time, domestic traffic saw a 4.1% increase in passenger movement in 2016 compared the year prior for a total of 45.6 million recorded passenger movements.

MAHB said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia:

International traffic recorded 52.8 million passengers, a year-on-year (Y-o-Y) increase of 6.1%, while domestic traffic recorded 65.7 million passenger movements with a 5.4% growth. International passenger growth momentum picked up in the second half of 2016 (2H16), improving from 5% y-o-y in 1H16 to 11% in 2H16.

According to MAHB all five international airports in Malaysia recorded growth between 3 and 13.6 per cent, while 11 of 21 domestic and international airports grew between 1 per cent and 21 per cents.

MAHB said:

The growth was achieved despite capacity reduction by Malaysia Airlines and its subsidiary Firefly as part of its restructuring process.

The operator said the following airports particularly had a strong showing and increased traffic in last year: Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Langkawi, Alor Setar, Ipoh, Tawau and Mulu.

When it comes to KLIA and KLIA2, the later served more passengers (27.1 million) in 2016 and recorded a 3% growth over 2015, while KLIA handled 25,5 million passengers, but recorded a Y-o-Y growth of 12.8%.

MAHB added:

This was additionally contributed by the transfer of Malindo Air and Lion Air from klia2 to KLIA (whereas) klia2 handled 27.1 million passengers, a growth of 3% in 2016 over 2015.

Aircraft movements, said MAHB, increased 0.6% in 2016. This was caused by a 5.9% drop in movements by AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, while only Malindo Air recorded an increase in aircraft movements for 2016 of 25.9%
