11th Jul 2017

According to Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) passenger traffic through 39 major Malaysian airports for June this year grew 13.5% compared to the same period previous year. Last year in June, MAHB recorded 6.68 million passengers, while this year that number went up to 7.58 million.

In addition, MAHB also reported an increase of 0.3 percentage points (ppts) to 74.1% in June 2017 compared to the same period in 2016 for overall average load factor. For the year so far, overage average load factor went up by 3.32 ppts to 76.3% year-on-year.

MAHB said in a statement about this:

Based on the prevailing indications and the current growth trend, there are optimistic signs that airports in Malaysia as a group are poised to achieve a growth rate of at least 8% for 2017.

The airport operator contributes these numbers to more available airline seats after the Hari Raya celebration at the end of the month.

MAHB said:

Twenty-four airlines in June and 28 airlines in the first half of 2017 (1H17) registered double-digit growth for international passenger traffic. This includes AirAsia X, All Nippon Airways, China Airlines, Malindo Air, Saudi Arabian Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.

Malaysian airports operated by MAHB handled 47.26 million passengers in the first six month this year, or 12.2% more than between January and June last year, when they handled a combined 42.14 million passengers.

Most passengers went through Kuala Lumpur International Airport. KLIA handled 28.43 million passengers in the January-June period 2017, or 14.5% more than 24.82 million in the same period a year ago. Passenger traffic through KLIA main terminal grew 23.3% and through KLIA2 7.2% year-on-year to 13.9 million and 14.5 million passengers in the first half of 2017, respectively.

In June alone, MAHB recorded 4.5 million passengers going through KLIA, or 15.1% more than 3.91% in June last year. This included 1.25 million domestic passengers and 3.25 million international ones. Compared to the same period last year, that’s an increase of 8.3% in domestic (last year the number was 1.15 million) and 17.9% in international passengers (from last year’s 2.76 million).
