Overview
Kerteh Airport is only small and was built to serve the oil platforms some 100-200 kilometres offshore in the South China Sea. Most of the flights are in helicopters operated by Malaysia Helicopter Services and the workers from ExxonMobil and Petronas are shuttled back and forth. Petroliam Nasional Berhad Petronas own and operate the airport through their East Coast Regional Office.
There used to be a fixed wing charter service to Subang, Kuala Lumpur but this has been replaced by a scheduled flight.
Runways
The runway is 3000 metres in length and is big enough for a Boeing 737-400 to land if necessary.
Terminals
Probably the terminals biggest claim to fame is that it has the first Mc Donald’s restaurant in Terengganu.
Flights and Destinations
Malaysia Helicopter Services – Oil Platforms
Firefly Airlines – Kuala Lumpur, Subang
Transport To and From the Airport
A taxi to or from the airport costs around RM20.
Car hire is available at the airport and it is probably better to book in advance. With a car you can go on a trip to Kuala Lumpur and drop by the Petronas Towers. The twin towers are impressive in the daytime but when night falls and the lights come on they are a spectacular sight.
The express bus station in Terengganu has links to local towns and Penang.
