The latest order of 55 A330 planes bring the total to 91 such aircraft on order by AirAsia X, making it the largest customer for the medium wide-body jetliner to date.
During the Farnborough Air Show in July this year, the low-cost giant signed a memorandum of agreement (MOU) with the same aircraft manufacturing company for 50 similar type of aircraft on top of the first 5 A330 that it already had signified to buy.
According to its founder and Director, Mr. Tony Fernandes, the latest purchase deal will enable the airline to support its growth in the years ahead as it expands further to cover more market within the region.
The aircraft, which will come equipped with the technologically-advanced Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engine (hence the name NEO) will start arriving by 2018.
Along with other Airbus' neo series such as the A320 family, the A330neo is considered as the most fuel efficient jetliner in its class.
Airbus CEO, John Leahy, said that the huge order for this type of aircraft by AirAsia X has become a major endorsement for the jetliner's reputed lower operating cost which will contribute to the airline's growth.
The A330 family, according to Airbus company, is part of the most modern and cost-efficient aircraft types in the world along withA350 XWB and the superjumbo A380 jets.
The passenger aircraft of the A330 family come in two variants (-200 and -300) that can be utilized for regional, medium or long-haul operations.
The aircraft family has a seating capacity between 250 and 500 passengers depending on the variant and configuration.
