AirAsia to Establish an LCC in Cambodia, Dedicates Plane to Late COO

17th May 2017

Reports from Cambodian media suggest that AirAsia Group is considering setting up a low-cost carrier in this country. These reports follow similar ones that the carrier will establish an LCC in China.

Apparently, the new LCC will be named AirAsia Cambodia.

Sun Chanthol, Cambodian Minister for Public Works and Transport was quoted saying:

The purpose of forming AirAsia Cambodia was brought up by AirAsia chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes (pic) in his meeting with Prime Minister Hun Sen last week on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on Asean. Fernandes told the prime minister that AirAsia Cambodia, as AirAsia’s new subsidiary, would be needed to handle an increasing number of air travellers from Malaysia to Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville.

According to Chanthol, the Cambodian PM is fully supportive of AirAsia Group CEO’s decision.

The proposal is now on the Cambodia’s Council of Ministers table, awaiting approval.

AirAsia X Dedicates Plane to Late Former Group COO

Meanwhile, AirAsia X management has dedicated one of its aircraft to the late former Chief Operating Officer Anaz Ahmad Tajuddin, who passed on 13th January this year.

AirAsia uploaded a tribute video in which the top executives and the people who worked closely with Anaz said a few words about him.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said:

We’re here to give tribute to one of our wonderful staff Anaz, who left us all too quickly.

AirAsia X CEO Ben Ismail said:

It’s a great day together. We are celebrating Anaz being one of the most important men in AirAsia … as you can see, I dedicated one of our aircrafts to him. The whole world has seen Anaz – from Japan to Australia to China to Sri Lanka.

AirAsia CEO Aireen Omar said this about the plane dedicated to Anaz:

It’s a fantastic plane, it’s lovely. Certainly very artistic also… something that I will always remember Anaz of.

Kamarudin Meranun, Executive Chairman, AirAsia added a few words of his own:

Hi guys, we are here to remember our dear brother Anaz. It’s happy because we still remember him but it’s also a sad affair. Having looked at the plane, it’s been great. (Anaz is) a very passionate Allstar and a very dear brother.

Fernandes and the rest introduced an Airbus A330 XXH plane, with three images of Anaz smiling and emblazoned with the words “A Truly Passionate Allstar” and “Anaz the Legend”.
