Asia’s biggest budget airline, Malaysian AirAsia Bhd continues to push for a dedicated low-cost carrier terminal (LCCT) at Kuching. This, the airline believes, will improve connectivity between Sarawak state and other domestic and international destinations.
Aireen Omar, Chief Executive Officer at AirAsia said that Kuching International Airport (KIA) has nearly reached its full guest handling capacity last year.
Omar said:
The capacity at KIA is five million passengers per annum. However, the airport has almost reached its capacity last year. I believed that is time to start looking for ways to expand the operation of the current airport, which will allow AirAsia to connect Sarawak with more international destinations. Increasing the number of international destinations to Kuching will also help the state government to achieve its goal in boosting tourist arrivals into Sarawak.
