Overview
Tanjung Manis Airport serves the Sarikei and Mukah Divisions of Sarawak, Malaysia and in the 77,000 hectares that make up the area there are seven islands. Travellers can find a laid-back holiday experience here with many tiny cottage industries being one of the attractions. Take some time to meet the locals and learn how to make fish crackers or try some songket weaving. Songket is a beautiful hand-woven cloth with gold and silver threaded through it that is often worn at weddings and special occasions.
About six kilometres north of Tanjung Manis Airport is Belawi Beach. With the direct road from Sibu now in place this is the favourite place for the residents of the town to escape to at weekends. Facilities are limited but there are toilets, showers and picnic areas.
Three decades ago Tanjung Manis on the Sungai Rejang river delta was nothing but mangrove and palm forest. Now Tanjung Manis is known mainly for being a future halal hub. The major connections to the rest of the world are already here with the airport, port and a decent road to Sibu, the nearest large town some 75 kilometres away. There are massive development plans in place that are programmed to run in phases until 2020 to cope with potential as well as existing investor demands.
The small airport is for domestic flights only and is owned by the Malaysian Government and operated by Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad.
History
The airport at Tanjung Manis was built in 2003 but with the development of the halal hub there are plans for expansion. The inaugural flight between Tanjung Manis Airport and Kuching took place on 5 April 2008.
