AirAsia Named Best LCC by Skytrax Again (9th Consecutive Time)

21st Jun 2017

For the 9th time in a row, AirAsia is walking away with the prestigious “World’s Best Low Cost Airline” award from Skytrax World Airline Awards in a ceremony held at Musee de l’Air et de l’Espace, Le Bourget Airport, Paris this Tuesday.

AirAsia Cabin Crew Head Suhaila Hassan had the honor of receiving the “Oscar of the aviation industry”, accompanied by AirAsia Ambassador David Foster and former Brazilian football player Roberto Carlos.

But this wasn’t the only “Oscar” AirAsia Group is walking away with. AirAsia’s long-haul low-cost affiliate airline AirAsia X also won two awards for the World’s Best Low Cost Airline Premium Seat and for the World’s Best Low Cost Airline Premium Cabin. This is the 5th time in a row that AAX has won these awards.

AirAsia Group Chief Executive Officer Tony Fernandes said after the ceremony:

We are now nine times world champion. To put it into perspective, Brazil won the FIFA World Cup five times, Michael Jordan was NBA champion six times and Michael Phelps holds the record for most first place finishes at a single Olympics with eight gold medals. We take the world champion title seriously and we will strive to continue to improve for both our guests and shareholders.

Fernandes also added that the plan now, after establishing a great brand in the last 15 years, is to create One AirAsia, an airline for the ASEAN community.

He also reinstated the desire to make AirAsia a digital airline:

We also want to recreate ourselves as a digital airline and use technology to drive more value.

With this, AirAsia and AirAsia X have won a total of 25 World Airline Awards since these Skytrax started to present them in 2001.

Meanwhile, the award for 2017 World’s Best Airline went to Qatar, Japan Airlines won Best Economy Class Airline Seat, Etihad walked away with the World’s Best First Class, ANA All Nippon Airways received World’s Best Airport Services, Emirates – World’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment, Saudi Arabian Airlines was named World’s Most Improved Airline, and Norwegian won the World’s Best Long Haul Low-Coast Airline and Best Low Cost Airline in Europe.
